cutting the m/m kisses like this might not seem like the biggest deal (oh the original still exists just watch it on Netflix or something!) but it’s indicative of the homophobia still deeply pervasive in desi culture and it’s something that affects my life every single day- https://twitter.com/comedycentralin/status/1107964091769847809
as a first generation immigrant and someone who spent a quarter of every year in India for most of my life. it’s apparent in the way my mom told me to change the channel when someone said the word lesbian because it was a ‘bad word’.-
it’s apparent in the way that my dad said ‘I hate gay people’ absolutely unprompted just thinking about our neighbors that were a married gay couple. it’s apparent in the way they whisper about the daughter of a family friend that got married to another woman.-
it’s apparent in the way that my parents and their friends denounced the only queer representation we got in bollywood movies by calling the movies disgusting and terrible. it’s obvious who the networks are trying to censor for-
and it’s the type of people who raised me, who have made it so that I can live on the east coast of the US and still feel like I have to live a lie and never come out to them, feel like I’ll have to spend the rest of my days suffocated by the lies and secrecy-
that won’t let me find the kind of love I want or live the kind of life I want. I’m so grateful to dan and schitt’s creek for not giving homophobia any kind of platform and creating a world we can aspire to live in someday but it’s obvious that we have a lot of catching up to do.
