Gossip Girl is actually a toxic show that misleads young viewers to believe unhealthy competition & white privilege is “cool”. In this essay I will-

(A thread)
First and foremost let me just say:

I used to watch Gossip Girl. I used to aspire to be Blair Waldorf. (Hint: USED to)
Let’s begin. These people in the picture are supposed to be “high schoolers” (and college students towards the middle/end of the show). Not only does it set unrealistic expectations for the young audiences that watch the show but also ????
Second: The whole show from beginning to end establishes the extremely unhealthy idea that competing in a very harmful way(even amongst your own friends) will help you succeed and reach your goals.....
And speaking of competing with your own friends... Lets not forget Blair and Serena were supossed to be “best friends” but continued to switch from that to enemies that tried to sabotage each other throughout the whole show?
AND LETS NOT FORGET CHUCK and how he tried to sex*ally ab*se a minor & sell his gf yet we were forced to sympathize with & feel sorry for him? (I’ll speak on his relationship with Blair in a bit too ☕️) What message does this send to young boys and girls who watch this?
Now....... can we talk about how Chuck & Blair’s relationship literally romanticized unhealthy and toxic relationships... or are we still “shipping” them as a couple?
AND SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP:

The show made the most “obnoxious” and easy to hate characters to be the ones from Brooklyn & with the less money/privilege

Making it seem like white/social mobility/wealth = being likeable & the ultimate goal
Getting back to the competition aspect of it. This show continuously pits womxn against each other as a way to erroneously depict “the process goal reaching”.
Not to talk about promoting consumerism, the glamorization of capitalism & power/wealth idealization as the road to happiness and fullfilment...
