Last month, I wrote this thread on twitter accessibility during my takeover of @traependergrast. Since then, I've learned a lot more about alt-text.

I think the messages in it are still important, but I want to add some more detail.

A #DisabledDocs Thread 🧵 https://twitter.com/traependergrast/status/1296101915567304705
First off - why?

When Blind folx and people with other sensory and processing disabilities use devices like screen readers, your tweets are read out to them. If you don't include 'alt text' the reader sees an image and just says 'image attached.'

That doesn't seem fair, right?
Add alt-text by clicking "Add Description" on twitter. If you're not sure how, here's twitters website tutorial:

This can be done for pics and gifs. For videos, reply with a description in a new tweet. https://help.twitter.com/en/using-twitter/picture-descriptions
Remember that it's always okay to just reply with a tweet if you're having a problem with the technology.

If you are trying out the 'add description' button, you can check to see if it worked by replying and tagging @ImageAltText - a bot that will see if you added a description.
You can certainly leave the alt text there and not tag the bot, but if you do tag the bot, it can send a reminder to other people!
What about detail?

Which would you prefer if you can't see the picture?

"Picture of Harry" or "Picture of Harry, a white male with short blonde hair and glasses, wearing a suit and drinking red wine on a couch before covid ruined his social life."
The same is even more important when the photo has information in it. Screen readers can't read the text of a photo, so if you are sharing a schedule, a flier, or a screenshot of an article, make sure to copy and paste the words or include a link!

And finally, realize that online accessibility is only a part of ensuring we all have equal access. Think about the conferences you attend and buildings you work in, too.

A very important thread, also from my takeover. https://twitter.com/traependergrast/status/1296129603430502400?s=20
