The cards only have a picture of the monster, the attack, and the defense on them. This means canonically the characters have MEMORIZED all of the card effects, or just accept the card effects when others tell them.

Weavile just ordered an attack, and Yugi [Yami???] just deadass played a spell card from his hand before the attack hit. And now his monster is losing attack points every SECOND??

we are 8 episodes in and yet no one has mentioned that Yugi& #39;s height just RANDOMLY FLUCTUTES, HIS EYES CHANGE SHAPE AND HIS VOICE CHANGES?!
I& #39;m on episode 9 and Kaiba is the first character to get a random theme song in the middle of the show????
