WHY DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME IS A CURSE DESIGNED TO CAUSE AS MUCH DISRUPTION AND SUFFERING AS POSSIBLE: a thread
abstract: daylight saving time has recently caused me an immense amount of pain, and I now have a personal vendetta against it. in this thread, I will explain how it has impacted me negatively, why it is unequivocally awful, and I will attempt to offer solutions to this curse.
around 2 weeks ago, I registered for an online information session for one the universities I am interested in attending. I wanted to know which of the session times would be most convenient for me to attend, and one that seemed to work for me was listed as 5:00pm, Mountain Time.
this university is out of province, and thus I had to do some time conversions in order to figure out what time 5:00pm Mountain Time would be in my time zone. I searched for what time zone my province is in, and google told me it was in the Central Standard Time zone.
I then searched for the difference between MT and CST, and google told me CST was 1 hour ahead out MT. that would mean that the 5:00pm MT meeting would be at 6:00pm CST, where I lived.
So I put a note in my phone for a 6:00pm meeting for this university. this would make sense for anywhere following CST, but I live in saskatchewan, the only fucking province in the whole of Canada that does not follow daylight savings time.
this time difference of 1 hour only applies if both provinces follow the ongoing daylight saving time (or DST). because my province doesn't, and because the university's province does, the 1 hour time zone difference is cancelled out the hour gained by that province in DST.
so 5:00pm there was actually 5:00pm here as well, not 6:00pm, despite our provinces being in different time zones. I ended up missing the meeting because of this misunderstanding.
you may think I would fault my province for not following daylight savings time, while every other province does, but I believe the lack of seasonal time changes in my province should actually be the norm.
DST is messy and can be extremely confusing, especially during the start and end. further confusion can be added to international interaction across time zones as not every country/region in the world follows it.
the studies concerning the energy saving effectiveness of DST are also conflicting. some suggest that it successfully decreases energy consumption in lighting, while others suggest that it actually increases energy consumption in heating cold mornings and cooling colder evenings.
my proposed solutions to the problems posed by DST:
1. abolish DST worldwide
2. end the seasonal time change for DST, and make it year-long
I personally favour the second option, as the energy saving possibility of DST could still take effect, while still avoiding the inconveniences of having to adjust times twice a year.
British Columbia follows a yearlong DST, and earlier this year, Yukon voted to eliminate the seasonal aspect of DST to make it yearlong as well. I believe the world could move to follow suit.
I am a high schooler who doesn't know shit but I do know that the inconsistencies caused by DST are inconvenient and cause suffering and I would like them to stop
