There was something important I wanted to say on today's pod. Hope this goes OK...

As a Wells shareholder I was concerned about Scharf's comments about there not being enough minority talent to fill the roles.
I heard a similar thing from a buddy at a Big 4 accounting firm. He complained that there weren't qualified candidates to hire. In that same conversation he mentioned that they hire from schools that invested in accounting.
That's when things got a little heated. I immediately raised my voice and said "The problem with those two statements is the schools with accounting programs like you're looking for probably underrepresent minorities. Go to Morehouse and find hungry kids. Train them."
My boy at BMO Harris Bank, Jonas Robinson, and I'm naming him because I'd run through fire to help him and he'd do the same for me, is a dude I'd take on any team any time. He was one of the hardest working people I ever saw there. And no one dressed better.
That kid did NOT have a typical background. But, he was a caddy, got hooked up with the right people, Oprah helped him go to Morehouse, and he worked his ass off to escape where he came from. I have mad love for him.
We need more of Jonas in Corporate America. We need to demand that Scharf and his colleagues make sure they turn over every single stone to find the next Jonas.
But we also cannot silence what Scharf said. I wasn't in the room, and probably dont have standing anyway, but the dude quoted here was:
So unless we want to dismiss him, let's take a moment to think about what Scharf is saying. What we, as a society need to address, in order to fix a problem Scharf *might* be being honest about.
I hope Charlie Scharf talks more candidly about this issue. I hope he has to answer some tough questions. And, I hope it actually furthers a conversation. And, if it's ignorance speaking, I hope Scharf really learns from this.
But I hope we really think about what we are saying when we discuss this story. I've been inside a news story. I know how the news skew can go depending on a few words and confirmations. So I'm reserving judgment until further information comes out; if it does.
Anyway, hope none of that pisses off too many people. But its a serious issue and not one I'm going to duck if I am also public about owning the shares.
