The 7 Deadly Sins of American Democracy 👇

1⃣ Voter Suppression - Broad attempts to systematically discourage or restrict access to registration and voting.
2⃣ Voter Erasure/Purging - A flawed process of cleaning up voter rolls by deleting names from registration lists.

While updating registration lists as voters die, move, or otherwise become ineligible is necessary & important, when done irresponsibly, it is disenfranchising.
3⃣ Felony Disenfranchisement - The practice of barring individuals from voting based on prior felony convictions. These policies often have a disproportionate impact on communities of color, who comprise the majority of the current criminal justice system population.
4⃣ The Corrupt Influence of Big Money in Politics -
Politicians rely on big money to fund increasingly expensive political campaigns, keeping people of color and low-income individuals (who have the voice to make necessary change) out of the competition.
5⃣ Gerrymandering - Drawing legislative districts to advantage one party or political interest. For example, district lines may be drawn to limit the amount of political ‘voice’ in an area with high representation of black and brown voters.
6⃣ Vulnerable Voting Systems & Trojan Media - Our elections are susceptible to cyberattacks, malfunctions, manipulation. Ecosystems open to tampering or malfunction can erode public trust in election outcomes and discourage people from voting.
7⃣ The Electoral College - Not only was the electoral college predicated on the abominable “Three-Fifths Compromise” - but to this day, it violates the constitutional principle of “One person, One vote,” signaling that some states and votes are less important than others.
