I use to have this mentality where I’d think people who can’t speak their mother tongue are “uncultured”. But growing up, I’ve realised that this has been drilled in by the older generation who shame us, yet they fail to encourage us to learn and embrace our cultural identity -
People won’t have learnt their native tongue for a variety of reasons and we can’t always assume that they are “lazy” or “ashamed of their culture”. Enforcing these ideas only leads to further isolation of people who want to stay in touch with their culture. -
It’s never too late to learn and it’s never too late to encourage. Share your resources, your experiences and your knowledge
