I know the return of COVID-19 is scary, and I know we have been through a lot as both individuals and as a people. But we have done so well to respond to threat, that this can be seen as another trial to be overcome. I won't portend to cite nationalistic sentiment, but more you.
You have survived an ordeal, months of drastic changes to your life. You have worked from home, worn a facemask, stepped out when you needed to, sacrificed your time and interests for the benefit of others. You have given the #NHS a lifeline to help those less fortunate.
When it comes down to it, every person has made a choice to engage with what has needed to be done. Sure, there may be doubts about the data, this is natural in science, and especially with something new. A year from now we will know much more. Thats how it works,
As a doctor, I have been lucky not to have been around COVID 19 much on the front line. I have been protected, but others haven't. I have worked in hospitals were the staff pulled together miraculously to save lives. I have seen frontline heroes come in day after day.
I have felt little next to them, knowing that they have taken the challenge of the world into their lives and come out fighting. I have seen people lose family and friends, but knowing we did our best is the most we can hope for. We fought the fight as individuals, for each other
As the lockdown restrictions escalate (and they very much might,) just remember that YOU are the one who makes this choice. You are the one who can be proud to make those differences that may save others. YOU are the one who can make this change. You are the hero of the story.
As I go to work everyday, I can be proud knowing that the frontline does not exist just in the hospital, it exists everywhere. We are all the frontline. We are all the arbiters of saving those who need it. By our action and not inaction we become part of the solution.
You are part of that, you make all of it. And I believe in you. This is not a question of politics, it is a question of empathy. It is a question of making the best of ourselves in times of strife. It is an opportunity to be brave and stalwart in the face of adversity.
This will be over when it is over. But when it is, you can look back and know that every choice you made led to a life saved. That every sacrifice led to survival, and every moment spent in compassion has given someone years to live, love and pass on their story.
I am proud of all of you, even those who doubt it, and I am here if you need it. We will beat this, not as a nation, or a party, but as a group of humans.
take care of each other, and when this is done, lets all take a moment to pay our respects to those lost. We are all human, and to lose is a deeply human thing, but to survive is equally powerful. Lets live on in their name.
Oh, and bang out a retweet. Lets spread something positive..
