So what is AAVE?

AAVE stands for African-American Vernacular English and is also referred to as BVE (Black Vernacular English). Most modern slang derives from AAVE.
In simpler terms, words/terms/phrases that originated in urban black communities are now being appropriated into modern slang. Here are some examples of AAVE you& #39;ve probably seen or used:
- "asf"
- "periodt"
- "it& #39;s the ______ for me"
- "not you ______"
etc.
here is an example of a white gay male appropriating aave: https://twitter.com/sweetnostaIgia/status/1281636404473323520?s=20">https://twitter.com/sweetnost...
So why is using AAVE harmful?

Black people are called ghetto, ratchet etc for using AAVE but when white/lgbtq people use it they& #39;re cute and trendy. This is an extremely racist and harmful double-standard.
So can I use AAVE? Why or why not?

The short answer is you shouldn& #39;t. Learn to take some AAVE terms out of your vocabulary. You don& #39;t need to respond to every sentence with "periodt" or use "asf" after everything. If you& #39;re gonna use them at all, use them in a correct way:
example:

"just woke up asf"
- this is an incorrect use of "asf" since it literally doesn& #39;t make sense. stop talking like that

"i& #39;m tired asf"
- this is a correct use of "asf" since you& #39;re describing how tired you are.
if you have any questions plss ask! it& #39;s never wrong to become more educated!!
