proud of my former coworkers at @mpr / APM for calling out leadership and a company culture that continually neglects its non-white audiences and workers. everything they're saying is true and @JonMcTaggart needs to listen https://www.transformmpr.org/anti-racism
it's 2020 and journalism must be actively anti-racist. and it must value and validate every person's voice and experience. @MPRnews is historically awful at giving institutions (eg. cops, corporations) far greater voice than the real humans impacted by their actions
part of changing this can be simple: give a police spokesperson the same weight in a story that you'd give an eyewitness. if a politician says something racist, call it racist. if someone says they were assaulted, believe them.
when I was there, I fought these battles internally and externally. finally, they spilled out into public view with @MarianneSCombs so bravely sharing her experience and leaving the company for journalism that'll inevitably be on the wrong side of history https://twitter.com/MarianneSCombs/status/1305519037607292929
MPR/APM also does a terrible job of hiring and retaining journalists of color. so many have been forced out or weren't given the opportunity to continue their careers after an internship or fellowship. these issues are why leadership is so blindingly white
MPR and APM staff have and will continue to do great work, thanks to the many amazing people who are still there. however, those in the senior management and editor classes must do better.
