Sometimes I wonder why an old ass woman like me support #MeghanAndHarry then I remember it’s the blatant racism, the outright rejection and unrelenting ridicule and hate that so many of us as WOC have experienced.
It’s seeing the royal family unapologetically reject her for being ‘different’ for wanting to focus on her work, not what she wears. She’s arguably the most accomplished woman both personally and professionally to marry into the firm yet she wasn’t good enough
Harry was encouraged to dump her and marry a ‘dim blonde’. Her existence in that space was so bothersome the servants refused to serve her, the dressmaker refused to keep appointments with her.
She mattered so little the media was encouraged to trash her character with impunity. She walked into that institution and chafed the lives of the women of the Hubb yet her efforts were linked to terrorism instead
It’s seeing how she couldn’t sit, stand or breathe in that space without offending. It’s seeing her efforts with Smart Works being ridiculed as self cantered merching while TOD gets praised for lighting empty boxes
It’s seeing how she was painted every stereotype of the angry black woman and the stone cold silence of the ‘royal’ family. It’s seeing the queen show up to church with her alleged pedophile son but not a kind word for her.
It’s seeing an entire country seemingly turn on its favourite prince for daring to stand by her. It’s that anger that boils inside when you imagine how lonely and isolated she mushy have felt.
It’s taken a well educated, intelligent, hard working, motivated and driven woman and reducing her to petty rumours and gossip. It’s looking at her barely black skin and realizing how deep the racism runs that even her as white passing as she is was too black for the royal family
It’s know how well received others would have been had they edited the fastest selling and award winning edition of British Vogue. It’s seeing her live the expression ‘Black women have to work twice as hard for a tenth the acceptance’
It’s seeing Harry literally stripped of his birth right because of her, it’s seeing Archie growing up in America because the UK and the firm could not accept him or his mother
I was never a royalist or even paid much attention to them but Meghan presence has definitely struck a chord in me. Her dehumanization has left me wanting to protect her and remind my two black daughters that not every space is friendly no matter how welcoming it seemed at first
I will never get past the palace denying trivial rumours like hair extension or baby Botox but not once asking for Meghan’s humanity to be considered, not during her pregnancy or even postpartum when it was clear she was struggling mentally. End of rant!
