my falling theory
-
an unnecessarily long analysis of the whole falling saga, my original favorite song on fine line.
DISCLAIMER. im a larrie. i believe that h'arry s'tyles and l'ouis t'omlinson are in a relationship. please click the little arrow in the top left corner of your screen if you are going to send hate to me for that.
tw // anxiety

again, please leave if you aren't a larrie or a curious, respectful anti. i have anxiety and the hate on threads like these ive gotten in the past has triggered my anxiety attacks.
okay, lets begin! i think falling is about the G-A-Y concert. i know, it sounds weird, and it was so long ago, but hear me out. here me out.
this day was a day where L was quite obviously extra flambouyant. and he was at a gay club, having the TIME of his life. both he and H were super duper smiley and touchy and L kept pointing to harry when they sang "thats what makes you beautiful"
so, now for the lyrics.
"I'm in my bed
And you're not here" not that they broke up, but just that L is gone, he's literally just not home, to clarify. but h knew it was coming, from the tone of the line. its not "i wake up to empty sheets", its that specifically
"And theres no one to blame but the drink and my wandering hands" —> the reason he isn’t there is bc of the drink (louis was VERY drunk at G-A-Y) and his wandering hands (they were incredibly touchy). note he says THE drink, not MY DRINK, insinuating it isn’t his drink, in fact.
"Forget what I said
It's not what I meant"
And I can't take it back, I can't unpack the baggage you left
last 3 lines are basically saying “i know i said you should go, but i changed my mind." and then, "this is too much for me to handle. can i do it?"
"What am I now? What am I now?
What if I'm someone I don't want around?" am i worth it ? am i worth what you will go through ?
"I'm falling again, I'm falling again, I'm fallin'" —> but im still falling in love with you. all over again, in fact.
"What if I'm down? What if I'm out?" —> what if im down to do this? or what if im out and i dont want to? what would happen then?
"What if I'm someone you won't talk about?" —> what if you forget about me? what if this love isn’t worth the pain ?
"I'm falling again, I'm falling again, I'm fallin'" the whole chorus is asking these hopeless, curious questions. its a cry for help, like defenceless.
"You said you care, and you missed me too" —> you said you wanted to do this. you said you’d come back and we'd be okay. ( miss you baby cakes. i miss you too, sweet cheeks).
"And the coffee's out at the Beachwood Cafe" —> i dont rlly think this has anything to do with the song, but just to point out where L went. he went TO LA.
And it kills me 'cause I know we've ran out of things we can say —> it kills me because we have no excuses left to give them—they won’t take any of our bs and they won’t believe us if we say we’ll stop interacting in interviews. its not that they dont have anything to say to+
+each other, but to management and to the label. no excuses.
and then the chorus again, asking all these questions.
"And I get the feeling that you'll never need me again" —> i get the feeling that you’ll change your mind. WHAT IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND and im not worth it to you anymore. what if what they say to you there is going to change us forever.
and then the chorus one last time, a final cry and declaration of an undying, hopeless, catastrophic love.
harry called this song feeling sad about what you lost. to me, its not that he lost L completely, or they broke up. its that he lost 𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘪𝘴. he lost the boy w/ the cake
overall, this song sort of reminds me of burn (hamilton), except less angry. it reminds me of sitting in front of a fireplace, writing a love letter, tears dripping onto a tea stained page. and then he burns the love letter, and its only resurfaced all these years later.
okay, now for the music video.
this is just for fun, but it reminds a lot of us of the piano scene in young and beautiful.
some things to note:
the floor looks like the floor at the beachwood cafe
the piano is especially nautical themed, painted with a fish that reminds me of the fish from adore you, aka louis the fish in gold (golden) and also with a ship that could allude to H's tattoo, of the+
+Royal Louis, named for King Louis XIV, the sun king. the ship sank on december 24th, which is quite weird. also, the walls are painting LOUIS BLUE. the same LOUIS BLUE of his eyes and in the suit.
i think its also good to note that he’s looking up a lot of the music video. its the hopeful, endearing, yearning for this love. he wants it. he craves it. he’s down.
in the music video, harry looks younger the minute he takes a plunge. i REALLY think this song is about a time a long time ago and he’s reliving all those emotions now.
i also want to talk about the eiffel tower. lots think its because of C, but because i believe its a stunt, here’s my thoughts on it. the eiffel tower could reference the paris interview. the only interview we’ve ever seen of just the two of them. the whole interview, they+
flirt and stare at each other and harry even points out that they’ve been dating for a year. they didn’t release this interview for literally seven years, and they weren’t allowed to get interviewed together just the two of them ever again. it was like a last hurrah.
lets talk quickly about the rings he shows off. on prominent display is the SUN RING. this ring is a custom made engagement ring with a stone called “stone of the sun”. it was made by Neil Lane Blue. they exclusively make UNIQUE CUSTOM ENGAGEMENT RING.
he wears it on his right middle finger, where he usually wears his peace ring, which is speculated to have been given to him by louis. he first wore the sun ring in nov/dec of last year.
okay, lastly for the music video, i want to talk about his lilac dress. it’s got an impressive train, and the first thing i thought was wedding dress. i thought commitment. i thought light and floaty and purely and utterly in love. “id give up everything just ask me to.”+
this dress is youthful and overwhelming and blind. also, the train starts at the bottom, and floats to the top when he’s in the water. i think the train represents his love. it starts waning, hurting, hindering underneath the touch of a closeting management. and as the song +
+continues, as the story goes on, he is just falling more and more in love. he’s falling in love, no matter how hard he’s trying not to. he’s helpless. he can’t help the gown floating as he’s plunged into water. and he also wears trousers—trousers that could mean grounding+
+him—his blunt and realist self. but throughout the video, the trousers are overwhelmed and overshadowed and outdone by the dress. his love is bigger than the reality. its more important. i want to note that he holds a drink in a golden-rimmed cup. a drink that likely+
symbolizes helplessness. an out of body experience.
overall, this whole song is really just that "fine line" harry uses so often in his songs between hopeless and hopeful. two ghosts, sweet creature, mmith, ftdt, esny, falling, tbsl, cherry... all of these songs have this tone.
anyways, i thought it was interesting. let me know what you think or if you have anything to add!
someone said this and i thought it was genius so here!! https://twitter.com/uflxwerufeast/status/1308633650355994629
i want to make it clear that, as a writer, sometimes you don’t realize you’re own symbolism. harry might not realize the significance of louis blue or “THE” drink versus “MY” drink in falling because, when you feel a lot of emotions, you feel them even more subconsciously.
also, all the questions he was asking?? the chorus? he answered them. go listen to if i could fly.
