Now I'm all-in for the replay of @CloudBees' Corryn Hutchinson interviewing @Stemettes' creator Dr. Anne-Marie Imafidon @aimafidon, by far my fav session at #DevOpsWorld so far.

Check it out #EthicsPosse! (Starts around 1:11 in the Resiliency and Innovation Keynote Replay)
"Tech had always been my thing. I've been the girl, then the young woman, and then the woman. But I never really realized that the two of them were kind of connected or that was some form of identity of being #WomenInTech." -- @aimafidon said until she went to an event for us.
Yes! Women-centered tech spaces mean we can support each other in feeling beautiful and feeling just super kick-ass at tech and talking really deep tech architectural topics and everything in between!

When #WomenInTech are in safe spaces, we can be both female and technical.
But at least in my home country of US and current country of UK, the number of women in tech are in steady decline.

So @aimafidon founded @Stemettes to build the next gen of #GirlsInSTEM who need to get not just the reading, writing and arithmetic, they need re-digital too.
THIS: @aimafidon says what we build is not in isolation anymore. What is built can end up moving election or collapsing economies or harming people.

"There's a lot of power in being able to create technology." -- We have to be intentional with how we wield it. #AIethics
"If we're not thinking about the wider impact of the tech that we're building, the consequences are actually quite large, in a way that if you're classically trained in the sciences, that was never part of what you were taught."
-- @aimafidon at #DevOpsWorld

Consequences matter.
One major consequence of what is being built is #FacialRecognition and #AI in general

"Hang on, just because we can build it, doesn't mean we should. And that's not baked in enough to a lot of our processes." -- @aimafidon

In the UK facial recognition IDing fails Black people.
FYI Black people are not exceptions or edge cases. The future just isn't always being built with them in mind. #BlackLivesMatter

"The more that we use tech and the more parts of life that it's going into, the more that these things are coming undone." -- @aimafidon
@aimafidon says we need to focus on doing more good than harm. But we struggle with business models that prioritize that. Those building the future have a responsibility to build a better future.

Of course, she says, a shortcut is having different perspectives in the room.
YES! My fav public topic: PERIODS! @aimafidon points out they are not usually strategic parts of #HealthTech apps but extra features at best, not full solutions.

(haven't added to this thread since lockdown which is weird because periods have been harder) https://twitter.com/jkriggins/status/1161945437533814784
"Is it that you've never met someone that has a #period? Is it that you don't hire them? Is it that you have them there and you shame them out of talking about it and then that means that the product you build is sub-par?"
-- @aimafidon

#Menstruation
Dr. Anne-Marie shares the story of a #HealthTech app that actually added a period tracker into their health tracker but for ten day periods... like no cycles are.

"It's useless in a way that's actually pretty obvious, if you just had someone in the room..." -- @aimafidon
The number one reason girls miss school is periods. This is a problem that has to be addressed even before teaching #GirlsWhoCode. We gotta do that too but we gotta treat employees and these future employees as full human beings. And build apps to treat it too. #PeriodPower
"What other more nuanced things are we missing out on? Whose perspectives are we missing out on? Whose experiences are we missing out on? It's continuing to harm us and it's one of those things...small moves in the wrong direction." -- @aimafidon #DevOpsWorld
"It's something that we've done time and time again, but now the stakes are higher." -- @aimafidon

Seatbelts and airbags are built for men, and then they killed women and children. Siri doesn't understand Scottish accents #NLP. Every user must be a priority.
If we're building tech for Everything -- education, healthcare, things that matter -- then we need to make sure that we're doing the right job:
☑️ in every interaction
☑️ in every planning meeting
☑️ in every code review
... we're choosing good rather than bad.
-- @aimafidon
