I feel inspired to paint on a large canvas. There is no art store nearby, and getting something shipped would take too long. But there is a hardware store a mile away that I can walk to. Let’s see what they have. Maybe some kind of flexible sheet, wall paints, and wood planks?
On my way.
The hardware store guy mixed me up three paint colors in pints (“sample” jars), I got a 1.5 inch brush, and he cut a 4x8 foot, 1/4 inch wide board into three pieces so it was manageable for me to carry back on foot. Excellent
The colors I chose against 5 PM sunlight
Doing calculations. 3 pints should cover 150 square feet in a single layer. So I have enough to do about 4 layers max on this 4x8 surface. I think that’s an okay amount, I’ll probably end up using it all.
Time to sand. I’m using 400 grit sandpaper. Sanding helps the paint stick better.
All ready for paint.
Looking at the colors again in white artificial light. Such a difference lighting makes!
My sleep schedule has been trashed ever since coming here. Guess I’ll just embrace that chaos tonight and brew some coffee.
Got one layer on and dried. Ready for a second layer.
I have spent so many years studying precision and mathematics. I have the ability to create really intricate and detailed shapes I know people would like. Maybe for that reason, there’s a freedom and relief in doing none of that.
I’ve just been painting layers and layers of different strokes for hours while listening to music. So therapeutic.
All prepped for the protective coating application
This’ll be a long process. 2 hours between coats, then 3 hours before I can gently take pieces off the table, 3 pieces to do, then 24 hours after thats done before I can handle them normally again.
While I wait for protective coats to dry, I’m working on the back frames. The frames will be invisible for people looking at the painting on the wall, but will provide stability and a way to help with wall hanging.
Frame parts are all ready. Setting aside while the protective coating odyssey continues
One more to go. Comparison between finish vs no finish
While I wait, sitting on the floor filing frame edges, so they’re smoother and more pleasing to look at, even though they’ll be hidden in the back.
Framing step. I have to line the frames exactly parallel to the edges, put wood glue on both the frame and the art, weigh down with books, then wipe off excess glue with a damp towel. Thinking on the easiest way to do each step. I’m going to brew some coffee for now.
One thing I find stressful about woodworking is precision is expected but wood is not perfect. And I know people want perfectly straight paintings. I’ll just do my very best and hope that people can adjust the hanging it if it’s not exactly level
