Following along as Minister of Justice @KayceeMaduYEG responds to what happened in Red Deer last weekend. RCMP have not laid any charges, and they are reportedly not investigating further. #ableg https://twitter.com/CityNewsYEG/status/1308200167212974080
It has begun. Madu starts by saying everyone has a right to peaceful protest. He is disturbed by some of the scenes he saw in Red Deer. Threats of violence are unacceptable.
Also denounces any instance of bigotry and intolerance. Will not tolerate it as Minister of Justice. "Disagreeing does not entitle one to use violence."
Madu says he has spoken to the RCMP Dep. Commissioner about this situation. Based on the conversation, RCMP has begun a criminal investigation.
Madu also spoke to Red Deer's mayor, and is promising the support of his department. He adds that he knows some people are demanding his department to announce charges, but he says that is not possible and he cannot order the RCMP to arrest anyone.
Will demand a full explanation from Dep. Commissioner Zablocki about what happened, however. Says police have a difficult job keeping the peace, but they must maintain confidence by explaining their actions here.
Wraps up his statement and will now take questions.
From @CityRachelle, what do you say about the criticisms directed towards RCMP and their inaction. Also, why hasn't Premier Kenney spoken about this?

Madu says this is his responsibility, and is sure that Kenney also condemns this event.
On the RCMP inaction, Zablocki gave him some details about the protest and the officers were only there to ensure the last part of the protest remained peaceful.
Do you think they did their job, though?

Madu says the protest moved at last minute, and the officers didn't follow the protestors and the violence happened before they arrived. This is what Zablocki told Madu.
From @MBellefontaine, unrelated question about Madu sending a letter to Bill Blair about Clare's Law.

Madu says he wants to be sure that the feds follow through on the province's commitment to combat domestic violence.
As a followup, any discussion about if RCMP will enforce the law? Madu says he hasn't had a conversation about it yet, but there seems to be some reluctance in Saskatchewan relating to enforcement, and that led to his letter
Third, and final, question from @tylerrdawson about his conversation with the Red Deer mayor.

Madu says this protests have been widespread and more are planned, and there's a chance that not everyone involved in the protest was from Red Deer.
Madu wants to be sure that in any future protests, he knows that everyone has the tools to ensure that it does not become violent.
"Thank you Minister, we're done," says spokesperson. Presser lasted 11 minutes.
