I know you people love tweeting things with no thought or regard for anything then move on to the next thing, but I honestly have to take my time and answer this question. https://twitter.com/choice_rap/status/1307440673960996866
The truth is, the depth of knowledge Lupe has in his head, Kendrick simply does not, and not even he would argue this. On a song like Around My Way, not even one of his best, Lupe touched on about 30 topics, mainly key points of Native American history I'd never heard of.
Lupe has rapped about government corruption, the exploitation of Africa, the foul state of the entertainment history, rape and trauma, the dangers of fast food, ills of ghetto life, and the oppression of women. Repeatedly. And he always absorbs you in it and makes you think.
Lupe's wordplay is extraordinary. Songs like Kick, Push and Gotta Eat are entire double entendres. In Mean and Vicious he took the PoV of the second verse. In songs like Poor Decisions and Failure he carried extended themes and metaphors for entire verses.
Then we come to dexterity. Rhyme, rhythm, meter, enunciation, breathing, top class. And his vocabulary is more expansive. Lupe has no crutch rhyming scheme he falls back on. Not even in the same verse. As an instrumentalist himself (tuba) he understands the music.
Lupe has deeper musical knowledge. Not only does he produce but he has genuine love for jazz and punk rock especially. And has also actually put out a massively under-appreciated post-punk album. He has also shown reverence for house, EDM, alt-rock, psychedelic rock, and trap.
I actually learned about the extraordinary Thelonius Monk from Lupe. Lupe also got me into post-punk and bands like Unkle. Lupe has also expanded rap music borders with collabs with Bassnectar and Fall Out Boy which was unusual for the genre at the time.
Kendrick has never achieved dexterity (laced with meaning) like the beginning of the third verse of Adoration of the Magi or Streets On Fire. No one invites Kendrick to universities to address students. Prof Cornell West does not interview him in front of his students.
Kids don't flock to message boards to discuss and break down Kendrick's puzzles like how we did for Dumb It Down or Form Follows Function. Fans don't do street protests for record labels to release Kendrick albums. Kendrick has never argued politics on The O'Reilly Factor.
People don't bring up the fact that Lupe rejected signing with both Jay-Z and Dr Dre, yet still topped charts. Nor that Lupe has proper street cred, runs his own label, and supports young entrepreneurs while his business mentor is in jail. So he's rapping facts, and you feel it.
Lupe made it cool to be like Kendrick, who embodies a style already done by rappers like DJ Quik, Childish Gambino, J Cole, Drake, and Kanye West, just slightly worse. He is several tiers below Lupe Fiasco, but luckily for him, you have to be smart to get Lupe, but not him.
Actually forgot to mention that http://Genius.com  was founded by some geeks who wanted to break down Lupe lyrics. Before that we gathered at http://songsmeanings.com  and some other message boards, just solving stuff together.
