Today, @wiredunion is holding a half-day work stoppage to protest @condenast’s inexcusable delays in recognizing us and their attempts to bust our union by carving out multiple groups of @wired editorial staff from our bargaining unit.
Five months ago today, we announced we were forming a union with @nyguild. Since then, @condenast has lied to us about the work our colleagues do in order to justify excluding them from our union, in addition to repeatedly canceling or showing up late and unprepared to meetings.
. @condenast says @wired reviews writers and our audience development team doesn’t belong in our editorial unit. But they are editorial employees — period. And we demand @rogerlynch recognize and include them.
Our reviews writers are indistinguishable from other writers at @wired. They work with editors, are held to the same editorial standards as every reporter, and produce the majority of our product coverage. Without them, we wouldn’t have a Gear section.
The audience development team works every day with the rest of the @wired staff to adapt and produce original content. @condenast insists that all they do is promote other people’s stories. This is a false mischaracterization of the creative, collaborative work they do.
It shouldn’t have taken this long — it didn’t for @newyorkerunion, @ars_union and @p4kunion. In fact, we’re breaking @bfnewsunion’s record for the longest voluntary recognition process in recent @nyguild history.
But we won’t accept these blatant attempts to bust our union. We still want to work with @condenast to make @wired a better publication, but we cannot do so until we have a unit that includes *all* of our members.
We need @rogerlynch @nxthompson and @condenast to recognize our union — including reviews and audience development — and to stop wasting time with endless delays and bad-faith arguments. We have work to do.
If you want to let @rogerlynch know you support @wiredunion, send us an email [email protected] and we’ll forward it to him.
