Why I Think Hunter X Hunter is a creative writing masterpiece:
Hunter X Hunter is the brainchild of Yoshihiro Togashi, it's a story that he has imbued with all his life energy, thoughts and experiences. At its core its a fantasy adventure, but to call it this would be a shallow description.
An epic tale of friendship and companionship, a commentary on the nature of humanity both good and evil, a discussion of morality, power, kindness, revenge, religion. All of these are a befitting description of the series.
To boil the story down to one single theme, one message that Togashi wants to say through this story, I believe it is found in Ging's chat with Gon in the final episode of the series;
"You should enjoy the little detours to the fullest. Because that's where you'll find the things more important than what you want." This is a perfect summary of Gon's adventure, every connection, friend or enemy Gon makes is but a detour from his true goal of finding his father.
Killua his best friend was found by a chance encounter at the hunter exam, the Phantom Troupe, one of the world's most dangerous groups, he met by simply wanting to help his friend Kurapika.
These small detours are Togashi's way of displaying and weaving his interests, opinions, and experiences on life into the story.
Gon, a kind, innocent and dream-filled character at points and at others, he is a person completely abject of morality, cruel and unforgiving, in Yorknew he is incapable of understanding the darkness withing the troupe, only to rely on it when necessary.
his character is hypocritical and can be seen as Togashi's interpretation of good and evil. Mereum can be seen as Togashi's commentary and questioning of humanity, change and conflict, a character who begins as a ruthless tyrant who through Komugi...
becomes one of the most human and altruistic characters in the whole arc in an ironic reversal of nature between Mereum and Gon. Nen, the power system of the world is one of the most creative, complex and brilliant aspects of the series...
inspired by Buddhist and eastern philosophy as well as Togashi's love of video games, is a unique way of revealing more about the nature of his characters, their personality and dreams, Kurapika's nen, chains down the troupe but also chains him to the hatred and solitude he feels
Chrollo's ability to steal nen is a metaphor for his lack of identity in the world. Greed Island shows Togashi's love of card and video games, the 13th Chairman Election arc is Togashi's thoughts on politics, the sly scheming nature of it and the good that comes from it.
Through these aspects Togashi expresses himself through his writing, resulting in a story with well-written nuanced characters, a complex and layered narrative that challenges your instinctual judgements of people and situations.
The end result is a story filled with personality, love, liveliness, depth and complexity that is matched by very few.
