When I was writing more about sexism and sexual assault in comedy, and a bunch of male comics were shitting on me - with mostly only women defending me - I was privately contacted by a few male comics asking how they can help when this stuff comes up, even though they are scared.
Here’s what I told them and what I’m telling you: you don’t have to yell at the big boys and tell them they’re disgusting jerks. You don’t have to scream. Just say “I don’t like that.” Say it. Say it when you hear people joking about sexually assaulting female comics.
Say it when you see clubs booking rapists or comedians who are ALREADY WELL KNOWN for assaulting club waitresses. And if that scares you, have a good think about why you’re scared to calmly make a man uncomfortable but NOT scared to put women in danger by not doing that.
Oh, and just GENERALLY saying it is not what I mean. If you say “I don’t like sexism” and then stay quiet & polite when you’re on a show with a fucking creep bc you don’t want to “make things awkward” with the booker or the comic, it DOESN’T COUNT. Make it weird, dude comics.
Don’t just like or retweet me. Get in the comments when some asshole tells a woman she is wrong/a dumb bitch about not wanting to get treated like meat/garbage. Since those people don’t believe women, show them that you do - maybe they’ll believe you.
