Sikh historiography has perpetuated some inaccuracies which have become truisms. So, a correction.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s empire was the third Sikh state.

First, Banda Singh Bahadur’s.

Second , Dal Khalsa Confederacy founded by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia in 1760s.

The Dal Khalsa not only took on and defeated what was perhaps the most powerful Asian Empire of the time, the Durrani Empire of Afghanistan: but was the first Indian power to reverse the trend of Central Asian conquests of India, liberating Punjab from foreign rule.
From the 1760s to 80s the various jathas of the Dal Khalsa were hegemonic (Cakravartin) over north India from Jhelum to Yamuna.

The Khalsa not only occupied Delhi numerous times but was pushing down the Ganga raiding the borders of Avadh.
