clearing up misconceptions about blackpink and their music: a thread
i’ve seen too many people say blackpink cant empower women for bs reasons. if ur reading this thread as someone who dislikes blackpink, i hope u can keep an OPEN MIND while considering all things here, and set aside previous negative opinions about them/their songs while reading.
1. “none of their songs have depth or emotion.” - ppl use adlibs/hooks to prove this, but those are meant to be simple and catchy. if you look at the bulk of the lyrics EVEN ON title tracks, you can see the lyrics are beautiful. these are just a few examples to read through!!
2. “all of their songs are by men, and for men.” i see this a lot, it’s also wrong. the lyrics above are not only androgynous, but during the release of as if it’s your last, jennie stated it never necessarily has to be about a man in this article. (1/3) https://m.entertain.naver.com/read?oid=382&aid=0000574251
(2/3) blackpink lyrics rarely exclusively mention men, the girls always say they can be about ANY kind of love. the few times they do mention men specifically, it’s to talk down. bekuh boom, one of their regular writers who is a woman + the girls explain ktl here.
(3/3) Jennie’s solo is also a GREAT example too. they have a lot of love songs, but they’re primarily empowering love songs. jennie confirmed her full participation in it too!
3. “blackpink don’t participate at all, they’re lazy and get everything handed to them” i have a few vids to share abt this, but the first one i’ll put is this clip of tommy brown, a VERY respected producer/works a lot for ariana grande said this about them
he talks about how they were working in the studio for 8 hours, and how the girls are super talented and hardworking overall. he also updated lots of pics with them working and creating, here are some of jenlisa.
here’s a video of selena gomez talking about how she’s never seen a work ethic like blackpinks and thinks she can learn a lot from them. dua lipa and lady gaga also have said similar things and that they’re pleasant to be around as well
literally can’t find the video clip ill add it later, in a recent interview with selena gomez rosé mentioned how they had been in the studio basically every single day for 8 months perfecting their craft and their input. in their recent interview with elle, they also talk abt it
4. “blackpink have a predominantly male fanbase/can’t be empowering to women because their entire career is abt men” w all the stuff above/examples of lyrical content/participating/their female staff debunking that, as of 2019, the fandom ratio was 88 percent female.
blackpink attract all kinds of people from everywhere, but here’s a vid that shows a lot of female fans!
a vid of katy perry talking about how their music makes her feel sexy
and here’s a thread of women feeling empowered by blackpink. as a woman, i can say i feel empowered by them as well, and i’m reminding you you don’t get to tell women what can and can’t empower them. https://twitter.com/jennieform/status/1304888989330157568
