Shadow justice minister @DavidLammy asks lord chancellor @RobertBuckland how he can turn up in the House with a straight face after voting (in support of the Internal Market Bill) to betray the oath he took as lord chancellor to respect the rule of law.
The lord chancellor @RobertBuckland replies saying he took the oath twice -- in English &Welsh -- and believes in it in both languages. He says he& #39;s done everything, consistent with the oath, to make sure the government acts in a way that is consistent with the rule of law.
Shadow justice minister @DavidLammy suggests lord chancellor @RobertBuckland risks bringing legal profession into disrepute by breaching bar& #39;s code of conduct which says you mustn& #39;t behave in a way likely to diminish the public& #39;s trust & confidence in him or the legal profession
Buckland says he& #39;s an MP & minister, but not a law officer & doesn& #39;t give legal advice to the government. Lammy appears to be shouting back that Buckland takes an oath to respect the rule of law.
I should have said that the tweets in this thread are from oral justice questions in the Commons this morning, which I& #39;ve just watched. During the session, we learnt it& #39;s the lord chancellor& #39;s 52nd birthday. Several MPs wished @RobertBuckland a happy birthday. [Ends]
