Has anyone noticed that "Theory" is losing adjectives that define its object (critical, literary, social, etc) and starting to turn into something more like a poetic genre—defined by a particular vocabulary and rhetorical stance?
This thread will really help students and I don't at all want to diss it—but it makes the transformation quite clear. Theory is conceived here as a genre and rhetorical strategy. https://twitter.com/ultramaricon/status/1308100854868664320?s=20
Meanwhile, we see all kinds of debates in the DH space that are, in fact, very clearly literary theory. But no one calls them "Theory." The term is in danger of becoming period-specific—like what happened to "ode."
