On this day, 2007, Yuvraj Singh blasted a 30-ball 70 against Australia in the World T20.

Far, far away, a mad day's cricket was unfolding at The Oval.

That also involved Indian in lead role. This man.

Let me first explain the scenario.

Before the last round began, Lancashire (playing Surrey at The Oval) were on 186, Sussex (vs Worcestershire at Hove) on 180, and Durham (vs Kent at Canterbury) on 177.5.

Durham won by eight wickets inside three days. They finished on 197.5.
+
Worcestershire, following on after finishing 319 behind Sussex, were 190/5.

Elsewhere, Lancashire, set 489 to win, finished on 27 for no loss.

Durham were now 197.5.

A win would get Sussex 22 and take them to 202.

A very unlikely win would take Lancashire to 204.
+
Mushtaq Ahmed wrapped things up inside 90 minutes. He finished with match figures of 13/215.

A large crowd gathered, but the Hove PA requested them to celebrate only after Surrey vs Lancashire got over.
+
What was going on at The Oval?

Chris Jordan had Paul Horton caught down leg.

Not for the first time did VVS Laxman emerge at No. 3 with everything stacked against his side.

His captain Mark Clifton was stumped soon, but with Stuart Law at the crease, Laxman upped the ante.
+
He was batting against a steep target (462 in one day), and he did not let the asking rate go out of hand.

Laxman accelerated even more when news arrived that Sussex had won the match comfortably.

Mark Butcher spread the field, but Laxman and Law kept finding the gaps.
+
At lunch they were 178/2, still 311 away.

Meanwhile, on the M23, roughly midway between The Oval and Hove, stood a sponsored car.

Inside it were ECB officials, carrying a cheque worth £100,000.

They still did not know which way they would need to go to deliver the prize.
+
Another 51 were added at The Oval before Laxman, trying to pull Salisbury, top edged and was caught by Mark Ramprakash.

He had set up the chase with a 100-ball 100 (16 fours) in a shade over two hours.

Lancashire needed another 260.
+
They needed 182 in 37 overs at tea, but by then Dernbach had taken out both Law and Steven Croft.

Back in Hove, the tension had got to Hampshire captain Chris Adams. He later confessed that it had been the most "excruciating afternoon" for him.
+
Luke Sutton and Glen Chapple hit out, missing, mistiming, but generally connecting.

Butcher now summoned former Pakistan A off-spinner Murtaza Hussain.

Murtaza got Chapple, Jordan got Sutton, they needed 110, but now Dominic Cork and Sajid Mahmood joined the party.
+
The field spread back further. The pair added 52 in 46 minutes.

Then Murtaza got Mahmood Dernbach took out Oliver Newby with a bouncer.

Another 37, but it had come down to the last wicket.

But there was still Cork, who now took charge.
+
He pushed No. 11 Gary Keedy for singles and hit Murtaza for four. They needed 25 in 29.

Then Murtaza tossed up. Cork swung, aiming for the mid-wicket fence. The ball brushed the bottom edge and hit the stumps.
Back in Hove, Sussex fans huddled in front of television sets erupted.

And somewhere on M23, that car turned the ignition on.
