No disrespect to Jen, but what I will say is that citing "I am a scientist" as a way to excuse your lack of political participation or ability to take a stand on political issues is a tone-deaf excuse and ignores the fact that there are scientists who literally can't do that. https://twitter.com/jenheemstra/status/1307645229458247681
Y'all (speaking broadly here) say things like "I can't be political" and in the same breath talk about #BlackLivesMatter .

Black Lives Matter is POLITICAL...and wouldn't you know it...there are ALSO Black people who are scientists, who are Black people before they're scientists.
It's weird because non-Black scientists act like going political is some act against nature. It's not, and if you take a look around, you'll see systemic racism and all other -isms at work, because your lab is looking like 40 shades of beige. #ScienceisPolitical
Also, the presumption that "I am scientist so I can't be political" has is that as a scientist you're purely objective.

Are you a human being? Yes? Then you're not purely objective. Your science is informed by your lived experience. #SorrynotSorry #WhyYouMadThough?
I think one of the worst qualities of scientists that I have observed as an emerging scientist is this unrelenting pursuit to be objective... at all cost.

Being objective cannot be the [only] goal if human life is ignored in the process. This is just common sense.
I am Black and a scientist, that in it of itself is political because the system that trains scientist never had me in mind in the first place.

Me literally existing in any form of the academy is form a protest because I am a Black [immigrant] womxn getting an education.
Let me end this sermon on Twitter mount with this:

Science is political because humans inform science and humans are informed by their lived experiences that reside within political and economic systems.

You are no longer allowed to cite this as an excuse.

This ends today.
You can take this thread and swap out science with reporting, acting, or any other field that wants to be "objective" when they really mean white.

Man, foh.
