SWTN Mutual Aid's Statement on @trussliz's announcement of the results of the GRA Consultation #UKTransRights
THREAD https://twitter.com/GEOgovuk/status/1308337608498520065?s=19
1/?
We gathered last night outside the Senedd to demand that the government commits to the reforms they promised and honour the consultation results which saw 70,000 stand up for self identification.
2/?
Today they have announced that the fee will be reduced and that the process will be moving online.

This does nothing to address the core issue of the GRA: that cisgender people ultimately have control over when and how trans and nonbinary people are recognised in law.
3/?
They decide how we are described when we die. There are thousands of trans and nonbinary people lying in graves that bear a stranger's name. All of us live in fear that our fate will be the same.
4/?
The government also said nothing to address the legal recognition of nonbinary people. The courts decided last week that nonbinary people are recognised under the 2010 Equality Act, but the government has ignored this and ignored the very existence of nonbinary people.
5/?
We are disgusted and enraged about this. Nonbinary people deserve the same protections as binary trans people, and we are disappointed that Stonewall also failed to mention them in their response to the government's statement. https://twitter.com/stonewalluk/status/1308338194652581889?s=19
6/?
Nonbinary people cannot be an afterthought in this conversation.

In order to avoid (well-founded) criticisms that these minimal reforms are not enough, the government has "announced" 3 new clinics and more funding for trans healthcare.
7/?
This funding is not new and neither are the clinics - trans people across the country have been working with health boards to create more clinics, and we think it is abhorrent for the tories to take credit for this as if they care about our waiting lists.
8/?
It is a clear deflection. We see right through it.

There is flagrant hypocrisy in declaring that the consultation was "skewed" by "trans rights groups" when they were found guilty by the courts of fiddling the brexit referendum through illegal spending and disinformation.
9/?
This rejection of the consultation is one small part of a wider pattern of undermining democracy and democratic processes. Everyone, cis and trans, should be concerned by this.
10/?
The Tories are manipulating and misrepresenting the will of the people and they must be held accountable for this slow murder of democracy.
11/?
Looking forward, we reaffirm our commitment to making sure that the needs of the trans and nonbinary community are met. We will also be speaking to @SeneddWales soon about the measures they can take to protect trans people under devolution sometime soon.
12/?
We were energised by last night's protest. We have such a strong community here in South Wales and we will get each other through this. If you can, please donate to our fund to help us support trans and nonbinary people directly. https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/8qdanpJgwp
