1. She needs an healthcare advocate.
In labour, most women can barely think, speak, make requests. She needs her partner to chase nurses, doctors.

The nurses and doctors have many patients. They will not stand beside your wife every second. If something goes wrong, she will have no one to help her call for help or ensure someone sees her. She may need someone to insist on a nurse or doctor checking on her

2. Encouragement. Her body is being ripped apart and there are moments she will think she can't do it anymore. Some women suddenly feel the urge to sleep. They don't know they are about to fall into a coma. If she has no one telling her to keep her eyes open, she will succumb

3. If your wife gets into any complication where she can't speak, they will need consent to make certain decisions. Not many women go to the hospital with a birth plan written out on what should happen if there are complications. She needs someone she can trust to make decisions

4. Who will be running around getting her water and spooning it in her mouth in labour? Because dehydration is a bastard. Is it the nurse that will be spooning small drops of water into her mouth? Who will offer her their hands to bear down on when she is pushing? Nurse too?
