Last month the US Attorney General removed the threat of the death penalty and told the British Home Secretary that if the legal hurdles preventing the transfer of evidence to American prosecutors couldn’t be overcome, the two men would be transferred to Iraq for trial instead.
The Home Office has now confirmed that the evidence held by British authorities relating to the two alleged executioners has just been sent to the US. A final legal hurdle for American prosecutors who want to put the two men on trial in Virginia.
“We are pleased with the Court’s decision and have now transferred the evidence to support the US investigation” a Home Office spokesperson said
