Trying to figure out if I want to use my prompt in an original format or fanfiction

Cuz like, the main characters are gonna be original but if it was a fanfic I could use hella references, interact with existing characters, operate within a world I'm familiar with, etc.
I feel like people who find fan fiction weird undersell the potential to write original ideas in a familiar setting. Sure, it's less original overall, but you don't have to spend time creating a unique an interesting setting if you use an already existing one.

Just imo
To clarify, no it isn't the classic "ship my non cannon otp" or "I want these characters to fuck" kind of fanfic (not that I believe there's anything wrong with them tbf). I'm just a big fan of the world and what I can have my characters do within it.
I'm not very creative in the world building department, and yet I refuse to write almost anything that doesn't have fantasy elements of some kind involved. I also fear implementing things, expanding upon them, and then creating plot holes or inconsistencies.
Not that I NEVER create my own settings and worlds to work with, just that I never feel satisfied with them, or just feel that something is almost always off.
Yeah Idk why I ranted about this at 3am, when literally none of my followers will ever be interested in what I have to say regarding this topic lol

Prolly gonna delete this thread as soon as I wake up but for now I'll just leave it here
