Something striking about the political moment we’re in: Covid is arguably biggest crisis/opportunity to reshape the political settlement and British state since the war. But neither the govt nor opposition seems very interested in doing so. Everything instead is about competence.
Govt does have Brexit as its grand project. But what’s striking about Lab under Starmer is that far from using the moment to press forward with its own ideas, ideologically, it’s on the retreat. Bet is basically the Biden one: by the elex, voters will want the politics to stop.
And competence (especially against Johnson) is what will matter most. Starmer has much more time to flesh out his ideas (would be unwise to reveal too much at this stage). But danger with this strategy will be if Tories change the exam question- by changing Boris Johnson.
