I love the opening scene of The End of Evangelion. Whenever I here people talk about it, the most annoying and misleading argument is that it is unnecessary or over the top or just there for the sake of having a sexualized scene..which is funny because there's nothing about the
scene that is sexualized, it is rather a realistic, unsettling depiction of a sexual act. It is authentic, emotional, definitely directed aesthetically and everything but unnecessary. It exemplifies Shinji's incredible despair and the fight of his physical urges against his moral
values. His crushing feelings of guilt afterwards only emphasize his self-hatred and his disability to cope with the situation. It almost hurts to watch. The steril setting of the hospital creates such an epic contrast to his chaotic emotional state. Opening scenes often lay the
the foundation for major conflicts of the story and The End of Evangelion does it excellently.
