The problem with activism is that (rightly or wrongly) it often feels like an exclusive space with certain rules and expectations - one in which some people belong and others don’t, especially for young people.
But I’m thinking today about how youth theatre - with its wide range of participants - can enable activism in people who don’t see themselves as activists.
If we do it right, we create a space for young people to consider the world and the change they want to see in it. And then to communicate that publicly in a way that fits with who they are and the audience they want to reach.
By doing this we have the opportunity to platform the views of people who might otherwise feel excluded from e.g the school strikes movement, and perhaps also act as a gateway to it. And we have the opportunity to reach and change different audiences too.
