Actually, i was thinking about this. It’s rooted in capitalism. You all are convinced your identity is what you consume: whether it be books, music, video games, tv, etc. capitalism has led u all to believe u are what you like when that’s not how it works. You all are convinced that just because you like media that is problematic, it makes you problematic. It doesn’t. Liking HP doesn’t make you JKR. Being an HP fan is not your identity. It is not who you are. (2/4)
Everyone is talking about death of the author and all but we really need to be talking about fan culture and consumption. You are not the content you like so you NEED to stop defending it like its a personal attack on you because it’s not. (3/4)
With the internet, it can be even cheaper to find alternatives when enjoying something so you don’t go out of your way to endorse the content creator! But the performative moralizing is just an attempt to hide a lot of projection (4/4)
Once you get a sense of identity that isn’t just “things i like” it becomes a lot easier to engage with things critically and not support problematic artists.
