Arguably the greatest vocalist of all time, here is a look inside the career of Mariah Carey and why her name deserves your respect. A very necessary thread:
The year of her meteoric rise to fame, was the year that she debuted. Mariah Carey was just 19 years old at the time. Her prime/peak, which came soon after, is what made her arguably the greatest vocalist of all time. Here is her performance of her classic hit ‘Vision of Love’.
Mariah Carey, making a name for herself, was compared to Whitney Houston from the moment her career began, to even today. The media pit them against each other by comparing them and false advertising fake feuds and rivalry, but they became close friends, even collaborating:
Mariah Carey performs ‘If It’s Over’ at the 1992 Grammy Awards. She was 22 years of age at the time.
Shortly after her career began, Mariah married sony music executive Tommy Mottola. She was 23, he was 44. Their relationship soon became abusive. Mariah reveals that she had to ask permission to leave the house. He controlled her and the her career. They split in 1998.
Growing up the child of a white mother and a black father, Mariah struggled with identity crisis being biracial. In an interview with Vulture, she explained that racism was a common occurrence growing up in an all-white neighbourhood. She also reveals that she was spat on.

Within the year following this performance of ‘Butterfly’ on the Letterman Show, Mariah’s voice began to deteriorate after being overworked and her struggle with vocal nodules.
Reasons explaining why her voice began to deteriorate after the year 1997-1998:
Vocal nodules are growths that form on the vocal folds (seen below). On the left, is a diagram of vocal nodules. On the right, are healthy vocal cords.
In this next video, it is obvious that Mariah Carey is struggling to sing due to her vocal nodules and assuming nervousness. The nodules reduce vocal range, increases cracks or breaking and makes it difficult to sing, as seen in the isolated performance mic feed below:
In a guest appearance on the Ellen Show back in 2008, Ellen questions Mariah on whether she is pregnant before pressuring her to toast with champagne for “not being pregnant”. A sly, unprofessional and invasive method of trying to get Mariah to reveal her pregnancy.
In an interview post being a guest on the Ellen show, Mariah admits that soon after, she had a miscarriage. Below is the transcript that explains that moment:
Mariah struggled throughout the early 2000’s. Her father, Alfred Roy Carey passed away from cancer. Here is here comeback performance of ‘Through the Rain’ on the Oprah Winfrey show:
As mentioned before, Mariah was compared to Whitney, the same way that Ariana Grande is compared to Mariah now. The media created a fake feud by pitting them against each other. They both respect each other. It’s time to stop comparing and start appreciating.
The infamous 2016 NYE performance fail that was due to technical difficulties and potential sabotage. This tarnished Mariah’s reputation and her image. Her talent was discredited and her name was slandered by the media, general population and magazines.
From “she can’t sing” to “her career is over”, a viral trend of memes and hate began.
Here is an audio of Mariah Carey addressing the NYE performance fail, explaining (as she did during the performance) that her ear monitors were not working and she couldn’t hear. She claims that she had been foiled. It’s obvious that she only intended to lip sync the whistles.
In this 2019 performance of her classic hit ‘Emotions’, she proves that her signature whistles are still intact 28 years later.
Mariah Carey performs her first single ‘Vision of Love’ live on GMA. Let me remind you that she is now 50 years old, yet she can still outsing the majority of singers today.
Provided below are a (selected) list of what Mariah has achieved throughout her career. Her groundbreaking success is incomparable. It’s also worth mentioning that she wrote 18 out of her 19 #1 hits. The songwriting credits are below:
Despite this success, the media have relentlessly tried to discredit her success and talent. A disturbing pattern that women in the music industry endure.

Finishing on a high note: literally. Mariah Carey doesn’t have any explaining or proving to do. Her unparalleled success, talent and iconic mark on history speaks for itself. Then, now and tomorrow: this is Mariah Carey.
