H ealth care: People I care about deeply are more likely to receive a lower quality of care because of their race or gender or their sexual orientation or ‘lifestyle’ or economic status.
People I love have pre-existing conditions that make insurance complicated at best and virtually impossible at worst. The current administration is taking actions that are making my loved ones scared, literally for their lives, if a medical emergency happens.
Health care is personal. Politics is personal. If you have the luxury of thinking otherwise, you’re pretty fortunate. Don’t, for a second, forget that. I know I try very hard to remember that everyone isn’t a white, cis, straight, monogamous, middle class, healthy person.
With privilege comes the weight of responsibility. If you don’t fall into a “high risk” population, you get to carry the burden of acting and speaking and voting on behalf of the majority of Americans who do fall into one of those categories.
Health care is personal. Politics is personal. Voting is personal. Don’t for a second pretend otherwise.
