Choosing to ignore someone else's access needs isn't ok if you are also disabled. Conflicting access needs are absolutely a thing, but we should at least try to meet the needs of other disabled people. Not even trying to think of a way is very telling tbh...
Absolutely every one of us will fuck up from time to time, I have and am sure I will again. But we all see who is trying and who actually doesn't care if something doesn't directly benefit them. We should stop giving people a pass.
You will find content of mine that isn't accessible to everyone. I'm not here to pretend I'm perfect, like most of us, I'm figuring this out as I go along. But if I'm not even trying or using the solutions people suggest, I have no right to say my blindness is the reason.
And the worst part of all this is I was scared to post this thread. What if the community turns on me, if I'm shut out from activism opportunities because of it. If that's something people have to worry about, we have a big problem.
Here are some more concrete examples. I may not be able to caption an hour long video quickly because my hands are already messed up, but I can write an overview, or ask for community captions.
Someone may be able to see a photo, but not translate that visual image into written language. They can't directly add alt text, but they ask their followers to reply with descriptions, which they quote on the thread.
Two people want to communicate, one needs to see to lip read, the other finds being on camera difficult. They compromise by texting instead.
None of these situations are totally perfect. We might not be using the exact tools we encourage others to. But they all demonstrate a willingness to try. If you can't even do that, I'm sorry but you're showing where your priorities lie.
And like I said I was worried about posting this because of the potential backlash. But also I have a big mouth. And at the end of the day, if I'm going to talk about access I can't sit here and maintain that double standard with a clear conscience.
And to be clear, I'm not talking about situations where you don't know. We're all learning. But when you've been asked multiple times and offered solutions, including crowd sourcing but you just don't want to.
