After a week of ‘virtual learning’ for my 1st and 2nd graders, I have a few personal reflections that I’d like to share from a mom who feels like she’s failing miserably... a thread 1/
Some children will be ok with virtual learning but that doesn’t mean that all children will be ok. The virtual learning environment is not a one size fits all and it may not fit for your child. 2/
Spending 5 hours per day going back and forth logging 2 children onto zoom meetings and then uploading each assignment and then helping with homework is going to impact your work productivity. That’s a fact! 3/
People go to school for years to become teachers so they should be the ones doing the teaching. Parents (unless they are also teachers) are not necessarily built for this kind of work. 4/
If you weren’t in the classroom when they explained the assignment it might be difficult to understand the assignment, even if you have a doctoral degree. It doesn’t mean you’re stupid. 5/
30 activities posted in 1 day on Seesaw can be overwhelming for anyone, child or parent. It doesn’t matter if they are for the whole week. 6/
When your child comes to you in tears because he can’t follow what is happening in his virtual learning classroom it’s ok to step away from your important zoom meeting even if you were mid sentence, no apologies necessary. 7/
The squeaky wheel gets the grease so if things are not working well don’t be shy about speaking up to teachers and principals. They need to know your perspective. It’s the only chance we have to make things better. 8/
Never let your child think he’s the reason this situation is not working well. This is not what we signed up for. The school system was not designed to work in this way. It’s no ones fault that this is really hard. 9/
This current situation is putting an enormous strain on working parents. My heart goes out to all of the parents who are struggling like me. You are not alone. 10/end
