Let's learn some history about #AssassinsCreedValhalla 's Landmark: SNOTINGHAMSCIRE (Nottingham)

I'll cover its history from the #Viking Invasion of 865 its establishing as part of Danelaw.(2-4)

Then,I'll cover SHERWOOD FOREST & how Vikings used it. (5-7)

#ACTheories: 8/9

🔲 #Vikings landed on English shores on 865, this time, to STAY for good.🏡

🔲1 area they invaded/settled in was Nottingham.

🔲We know bc Anglo-Saxon Chronicles say, "In this year..the (Danish) army went into Mercia & Nottingham & took up winter quarters there."(mercian)🪓

2/9
🔲Mercia asked for Wessex help. In the end Mercia made peace with Vikings

🔲For the time, Vikings moved back to York (Jorvik), but #LikeaViking they came back!

🔲In 877,fighting Alfred of Wessex,Vikings split & colonized what would be 5 Danelaw boroughs Nottingham included

3/9
🔲In 878, Alfred won against King Guthrum, but knew he had to live w/ #Vikings. England split in half, aka, Danelaw.

🔲This let Vikings have 5 boroughs (Nottingham,Derby,Leicester,Lincoln,& Stamford)

🔲Nottingham now belonged to Vikings, who set laws in Sherwood Forest..

4/9
🔲Sherwood Forest has 3 Wapentakes (Bassetlaw, Thurgarton & Broxtowe) where Viking Officials made laws, settled cases.

🔲"Wapentake comes from Old Norse 'vapnatak' which may refer to the method of voting at a meeting by raising weapons."(mercian)

🔲Let's look at one..👇

5/9
🔲In Bassetlaw, there's a site named Thynghowe, a name of Viking Origin= "'hill of assembly or meeting place'"(mercian)

🔲West Edge of Sherwood Forest

🔲The Friend of Thynghowe Excavation found the circle where, " they would've.. discussed laws."(ancient)

More deets👇

6/9
🔲Excavators call this meeting of settling laws/disputes b/w locals a "Thing," Viking custom.

🔲"There was hierarchy of Things ranging from local meetings to major regional assemblies."(thynghowe)

🔲Speaker shouted verdicts on top of hill, (think Bjorn settling issue here)

#AssassinsCreedValhalla Theories:

🔲Now, Nottingham will for sure be filled with #Vikings or Danes. It's a Viking Town, it has to be at some point.

🔲I think Sherwood Forest may be used for town meetings, making crucial laws, settling disputes among Nottingham's people.🧑‍⚖️
