So I decided to make a thread about why I am voting for Biden. These are the reasons I have decided are important and I have researched them and feel confident in my evidence and reasoning. I am 100% willing to defend any of these points:
1. Economics: Trump& #39;s tax cuts reduced tax revenue by about 1.5 trillion dollars over ten years. It had no measurable impact on GDP or workers& #39; wages. That is 1.5 trillion dollars down the drain. https://www.everycrsreport.com/files/20190522_R45736_8a1214e903ee2b719e00731791d60f26d75d35f4.pdf">https://www.everycrsreport.com/files/201...
Trump& #39;s tarriffs are being paid by us, not China. For every 1 dollar of tarriffs, we are paying between 80 cents and a dollar in increased prices for goods. That money is going to subsidize farmers who are getting hurt by reciprocal tariffs. https://www.nber.org/papers/w25638.pdf">https://www.nber.org/papers/w2... is one example
In the end, this ends up being just an increase in taxes that has no economical benefit to us. We don& #39;t get more government revenue or more jobs (manufacturing jobs have continued to decline over last four years). That and the tax cuts makes me think Trump is hurting the economy
2. COVID: Trump has failed to be effective in crisis situations (see response to Hurricane Maria as well). Biden warned about a possible pandemic last OCTOBER https://twitter.com/JoeBiden/status/1187829299207954437?s=20">https://twitter.com/JoeBiden/...
What could Trump have done? He could have improved and increased testing early on (remember him promising testing sites in Walmart parking lots?). By the time we had testing, it was spread significantly too much to control.
He could also be more encouraging of taking the virus seriously. He admitted to downplaying it. He expressed doubt about masks LAST WEEK! He clearly cares more about the economy, which is why he downplays it, which ironically hurts the economy more because it spreads!
The lockdown had a very minimal impact on the economy (see https://nber.org/papers/w27432 )">https://nber.org/papers/w2... and the politicians worried about getting reelected (politics) were less likely to impose lockdowns (see https://nber.org/papers/w27498?utm_campaign=ntwh&utm_medium=email&utm_source=ntwg6).">https://nber.org/papers/w2... The lockdowns don& #39;t kill the economy. The virus does.
3. Social Justice and crime: African-Americans are discriminated against by police and in the workplace. A thread of some of the research about this is included in the thread here https://twitter.com/joecooprider/status/1298732676703166464?s=20">https://twitter.com/joecoopri...
I trust Biden to improve on these issues more than most (so do most African-Americans). He supports police reform that can decrease police discriminatory practices, which I believe are the most pressing.
No, Biden does not want to defund the police. He doesn& #39;t want to spend less money on the police, like both Trump and Jo Jorgenson want to do.
I get that there is some doubt about the crime bill he was the author of in 1994. There was some good stuff and was supported by both Republicans and the CBC. The mandatory minimums were added to get Republicans on board. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2019/09/joe-biden-crime-bill-and-americans-short-memory/597547/">https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/...
I don& #39;t know what the best solution is, but getting rid of Obamacare and decreasing medicare would be bad society and cost some people their lives.
5. Immigration: Trump is planning on decreasing legal immigration in half by 2021. Immigrants help American businesses and innovation which helps the economy for all of us. #48582e9d56c0">https://www.forbes.com/sites/stuartanderson/2020/08/26/fact-check-and-review-of-trump-immigration-policy/ #48582e9d56c0">https://www.forbes.com/sites/stu...
Refugees are down 84%. We have the best economy in the world, and are able to take more. We should be willing to take more. This stuff is much more important to me than the additional 5 walls of Border Wall that Trump has build. https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/first-presidency-releases-statement-refugees-2019">https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/f...
We should be open to accepting more people in our successful communities. Stop restrictive zoning and regulations. Build more houses and apartments. Keep housing affordable and let more people have access to success. Biden isn& #39;t the best at this, but he is a lot better than Trump
So that is my thread on why Biden should be President. If you think I have my facts wrong or want to know my sources, let me know. I would be happy to share the studies behind my statements
