thread of yt women authors who write about BIPOC historical figures even tho they have no business doing so!! add to this if you can
I’m gonna start with @nchurnin and @AuthorSSlade cause reading their work inspired me to do this thread :)
we’re gonna start with @AuthorSSlade by looking at her face compared to the faces she features and writes about cause ... yikes
I read her book about Book T Washington, which there’s A LOT to be said about the man as a historical figure, but @AuthorSSlade shares he “believed that if African Americans worked hard, white people would begin to respect them”
and this is what happens when yt women write children’s literature featuring BIPOC characters. they use that identity to make children feel represented and seen, but they push white supremacist ideology onto kids
@nchurnin also has multiple books featuring faces that do not look like hers
the book I read was Charlie Takes his Shot by @nchurnin
Charlie looks at Jackie Robinson as a role model and says “Jackie didn’t quit or lose his temper. Quietly yet powerfully, he helped his team...”

when yt woman write about Black men they want it seem like their success comes from them being not angry and “quiet” because that’s what makes yt women comfortable. again these books are read to children and plant the seeds of yt supremacy early
children’s literature can be the most beautiful and powerful literature in the world or it can just be conditioning for kids to behave like yt woman want them to
and idk why yt woman feel comfortable writing about people who aren’t yt woman. I’m sure I’m gonna be adding more to this thread but you should too!
