What IF the 3 vets are right?
I dunno the diagnosis the 3 made though
But I've some explanations to make
So kindly go thru it https://twitter.com/TheBlarkKratos/status/1307943617223368705
Making diagnosis in Nigeria as a vet has to be one of the toughest thing to do due to some reasons beyond the control of many veterinarians
1. Non availability of laboratories to carry out test to arrive at definitive diagnoses.
2. Client not being able go afford cost of tests
3. Clients not willing to pay for the tests
And many other reasons including interrupted power supply etc
Now there's what we call differential diagnosis
A particular disease can have as much as 10 differential diagnosis
Meaning the symptoms the disease condition presents..
Other disease can present such symptoms and the only way to differentiate them is by carrying out tests
Now when tests cant be carried out
The onus lies on the vets to treat symptomatically i.e treat based on symptoms the disease shows
And sometimes this disease can have..
Same treatment regimen
In the country we happened to find ourselves as veterinarians aside the 10 veterinary school present in the country, which state can boost of a well equipped vet clinic and diagnostic centers both in terms of equipment and technical staffs?
The few centers we have are privately owned by individuals and definitely charges might not be pocket friendly to many clients.
When i was a clinical student clients come into the clinic and the simplest of test to be carried out eg microbial culture test, antibiotics sensitivity
And parasitological test which all cost less than 10,000 at the vet hospitals
You see client saying they don't want any test, just give injections
Injections?
When i have about 10 different diseases running thru my head
How do i go about that?
Carrying out these tests isn't something to be done in a day
Culture of bacteria might take 48 hours
Parasitological test can take 24hrs
And so on like that
So what should the vet do?
Wait till test comes out?
Definitely not
So from the list of differentials he has..
He goes for a tentative DX
Meaning the one he thinks he might be dealing with
*Note he might be wrong or right
So he starts treatment while waiting for test result
When result comes if his tentative DX is same as the definitive he continue if not he changes the line of treatment
DX isn't something that is easy to make
Client should make it easy for us by willing to pay for cost of tests
No one is and island of knowledge
What i know another person might not know and vice versa
Please lets stop talking down on veterinarians
Vets in Nigeria are less than 10,000
I graduated 2018 and I'm number 88*9
With the population we have
How do we cope?
Government doesn't employ most so we resort to private practice
Some states have no vet covering some local government
In fact a state in this country once have one state employed vet Dr
Just 1 in the whole state!!!!!
Dunno if that has changed
This tweet isn't trying to say we don't have our shortcomings but please give us the credit we deserve no matter how little it maybe
And the attacks we receive most times comes from the dog twitter community
You guys really need to do better
I stopped commenting on anything relating to dogs here sometimes back because of the harsh, derogatory and abusive words dog owners and breeders use on vets when airing their opinions.

But i just have to say this tonight
I come in peace ✌🏽
