The CLEAREST thinker on Twitter: @JamesClear (no pun intended)

He's known for Atomic Habits, but his wisdom goes far beyond behavior change.

I spent the last few weeks going through his best essays and interviews.

Here are the 10 mental models that stuck with me.

THREAD...
1/ THE FOUR LAWS OF BEHAVIOR CHANGE

1. Cue - make it obvious.
2. Craving - make it attractive.
3. Response - make it easy.
4. Reward - make it satisfying.

Atomic Habits does one thing better than any book.

It teaches you how to do the things you say you're going to do.
2/ THE IMPORTANCE OF COMPOUNDING

• Every huge success is the result of compounding small successes.

• The first rule of compounding: Never interrupt it unnecessarily.

• Successful people never let a day pass without doing something that will benefit them in a decade.
3/ CONSISTENCY > INTENSITY

• Long-term results come from consistency, then intensity.
• To run a marathon, start by running a mile every day.
• To write a book, start by writing 500 words every day.

To win long-term, start with consistency, then build the intensity.
4/ SUCCESS IS WHAT YOU AVOID

Inversion: instead of trying to guarantee success, find what guarantees failure. Then just avoid those things.

• Health is the food you don't eat.
• Wealth is the money you don't spend.
• Happiness is the things you don't desire.
5/ MACRO GOALS, MICRO ACTIONS

• Keep your goals macro: big, audacious, long-term goals.
• Keep your actions micro: tiny, simple, daily actions.

Focus on creating a system of micro-actions that make the achievement of your macro-goals inevitable.
6/ THE IMPORTANCE OF FRICTION

Friction is the world's most underappreciated force.

Leverage it.

• To do more of something, reduce the friction.
• To do less of something, increase the friction.

Minimize start-up costs, maximize effectiveness.
7/ THE DEFINITION OF WEALTH

There are four types of wealth: money, status, freedom, and health.

Wealth is the ability to choose:

• What you work on.
• What you think about.
• How you spend your time
• Where you spend your time.
• Who you spend your time with.
8/ READ THE BEST SPEECHES

• Speeches strike the perfect balance of being evergreen, practical, and concise.

• Now I'm replacing podcasts episodes with classic speeches.

• Lindy Effect: if a speech is still around, it is worth listening to. https://jamesclear.com/great-speeches
9/ CHANGE YOUR TRIBE

• Changing your habits requires changing your tribe.

• Every tribe has a set of expectations that can be difficult to go against.

• Ditch the tribe that encourages your worst habits.

• Find the tribe that reinforces your best habits.
10/ MODERN-DAY SUPERPOWERS

• Forming habits quickly
• Getting to action rapidly
• Filtering noise ruthlessly
• Showing up consistently
• Seeking feedback actively
• Not taking things personally
• Directing effort intentionally
• Giving your time generously
