I& #39;ve been 25 years in third level education. I started my undergraduate degree in September 1995.
I& #39;ve studied at 3 unis. I was funded by the Irish and UK govts. I& #39;ve worked on 5 unis. In 3 countries. On 2 hemispheres.
I genuinely love it.

Key lessons: I dunno.
But the greatest privilege of my professional life is that I constantly/daily get to walk into rooms (or zoom/teams meetings) & not be the smartest person in the room.

I walk into staff meetings & conferences surrounded by world experts.
I walk into PhD supervisions knowing that the candidate has read more about this than I have.
I walk into tutorials/seminars/lectures & I know that out there is someone smarter than I am.

And that& #39;s a real buzz. I get to learn from smarter people every single day of my life.
I& #39;ve told this story before. But when I was in final year at Uni my dad decided to study law. He had never finished school. He had become a public servant. He studied law part time. I studied full-time. Both at the same Uni. He paid for me to study and for him to study.
I& #39;d meet him and his friends in the College Bar in the evenings. They were my first "tutorial" group. They& #39;d buy me coffee/pints. I& #39;d answer their law questions.
I got a 2:1. He was v proud. He got a 2:2. I was a bit embarrassed that he& #39;d done that well given everything else he had going on whilst I was just... Being me.
My dad was the best law student I& #39;ve ever known.
And you should learn from him. Work with your peers. Work within your limits. Never give up!
