Interested in College Greek Life?

Greek Life holds such a bad connotation, so let me break down my thoughts as an alumni of @BetaThetaPi
"What is Greek life?"

Greek life is a community of students in a social organization associated with a National Chapter.

All Male groups are Fraternities
All Female groups are Sororities

Co-Ed groups are called Fraternities as well
Some common negative perceptions of Greek life:

-Just an organization to drink, smoke, and party
-Rich/privileged kids
-Kids that want to get hazed
-"Why do you need to pay for friends?"
How Greek Life actually is:

-Weekly meetings and assignments
-Upheld to a higher standard
-Mandatory study hours
-Party on the weekends
-Built a network of friends
-Partake in fun philanthropic events to raise money for charities

It's like taking 2 unit course
Greek Life members are held to a higher standard with academics.

We have minimum GPAs we need to obtain to stay in the group.

If any one is falling behind, organizations have so many resources to help you improve.

You are now a part of a network that is willing to help
@BetaThetaPi 's motto was

To Develop Men of Principle to live a principled life.

With our core values being:

Intellect, responsible conduct, mutual assistance, integrity and trust

We were upheld to this standard.
Networking

In Greek Life, you meet so many people. I am not just talking about in the fraternity you are in.

You will have so many events with other fraternities and sororities that you are building so many new connections that you wouldn't have
At my school, we have a musical competition where we are paired with another fraternity and 1 sorority where we practice choreography and singing to deliver a musical performance against other pairings.

A great event!
Costs

Yes, it can be expensive to join. This is due to all the events you will be partaking in.

Also each chapter has to be membership fees to the national chapter so that is another cost.
This is why people think Greek Life is only for rich privileged kids.

For me, my thoughts are I can always make money but I can never buy back experience.

I worked part time while for my fraternity fees as well as other costs I had.

My fraternity helped me get my job too
Greek Life has its ups and downs.

It also depends on the organization you join and what they are known for.

In the end, I felt it was an experience I would only get in college so I did it.

To each, their own.
