The Falcons aren’t perennial losers (anymore) but they are without a doubt the dumbest franchise in the NFL. Sunday is just the latest example but here’s a somewhat chronological thread of idiocy:
The Falcons never had a 1000-yard rusher until Dave Hampton seemingly set that mark in a December 1972 game. The game was stopped to hand him a game ball...only for him to be dropped for a loss the next rush and finish the season at 995 yards.
The Grits Blitz team of 1977 used an aggressive pass rush scheme to terrorize offenses. To this day, they hold the NFL record for scoring defense (9.2 PPG). The team went 7-7 and missed the playoffs.
The 12-4 Falcons matched up with the Cowboys in the divisional round of the 1980 playoffs. A 27-17 lead late in the fourth quarter was erased in a hurry, even though they had a hard count specifically that drew Ed Jones offsides to ice the game but didn’t snap it.
The Falcons drafted Brett Favre in the second round of the 1991 draft. He fell to #3 on the QB depth chart and took 5 snaps all season, two incompletions, two interceptions and a sack. He had an alright career in Green Bay.
The award that would be the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year went to starting safety Eugene Robinson in 1998. He would be arrested for soliciting a prostitute the night before the Super Bowl XXXIII, a 34-19 loss.
The franchise QB was arrested for dogfighting in 2007. Still wild. But the investigation stemmed from trying to pass a water bottle through airport security that smelled like marijuana. I mean, how?
Head coach — for 13 games — Bobby Petrino just, you know, dipped to Arkansas in the middle of the night that with just a four sentence note to the team in the locker room.
The Falcons defense outscored their offense 2 to 0 in a postseason loss to the Giants.
They blew three score leads in two consecutive postseason games in a one week span in the 2012 season.
The 2015 Falcons kicked a FG down 4 from the 1-yard line with less than 3 minutes to play. Spoiler: they lost by 1.
28-3. Next tweet.
Blew a 21-0 lead to the Lions in London in 2014, proving their collapses can travel internationally.
