I met him when I was moving into my first flat. He was working at Nakumatt Ukay Center and he had a broad smile and easy laugh! Over the years as I settled in to my home and work, we& #39;d meet when I& #39;d pop in to Namukatt for groceries, and household goods.
He was always so helpful and friendly, reminding me of my on-air conversations with different people and encouraging me to keep going even when things got tough. When the terrorist attack happened at Westgate, I knew Ndegwa must have been at work.
I don& #39;t think he ever missed a day of work. I was right.
I thought about his young family. I thought about his parents. And I dreaded making that phone call to him. How do you grieve for someone you barely know, but feel like you& #39;ve known forever?

Eventually I made the call, and there was no answer. So I called again and still, there was no answer. As the horrific events of the day continued to play out, I thought of Ndegwa at Nakumatt and could not imagine that I would not see him again.
Then my phone rang. It was Ndegwa sounding so shaken. He had survived the attack and was in hospital. A news agency I had spoken to wanted to interview Ndegwa and he was such a sport, agreeing to talk about what happened that terrible day.
Ndegwa still remains one of the friendliest people I know and his family must be grateful that he is here, still cheering everyone on, even when things get tough. So many people lost loved ones, and many are living with the physical and psychological scars from that attack.
I& #39;m saying a prayer for all who lived through that trauma and pray that it shall never happen again.
It doesn’t take much to cheer someone up, and it costs nothing to be kind! Thank you Ndegwa for reminding me how simple and great friendship is! Blessings tele to you
