How to adapt and grow your twitter account - September 2020

*/A THREAD/*
Disclaimer: What I'm about to tell you about are purely my insights after some research work and a lot of conversations with great accounts on Money Twitter

Get yourself comfortable, this will be a long one
As you've probably noticed, it's getting harder and harder to grow on twitter

• Days with <5 new followers
• Tweets getting 0 engagement
• Tweets with links not getting any visibility
Twitter's algorithm has changed a few time ago and you barely see accounts growing from 0 to 1k in less than 1 month anymore

Why's that happening?

For two main reasons 👇👇
1- If your tweet gets low engagement on the first minutes, your tweet dies

When your account is small, it's hard for your tweet to ignite within the first minutes due to lack of audience
2- People are sick of seeing the same content on their feed

There's no reason for them to follow another similar account

Both of these reasons are causing a lot of new accounts being stuck at <100 followers for weeks or months
The solution is clear to me

However, it's not easy

The bar is getting higher, so you gotta bring new quality content to the table
What do I mean by this?

You don't have to be 100% original and create new content, that's not something you have to invent yourself

But you got to explore, study, and deliver content that is not being talked on twitter 24/7
You don't have to post 5-10 tweets about it per day

There is still room for platitudes (as long as you don't overdo it)

Every account does that anyway
You don't need to come up with new content every day

Sometimes all you need is to recycle some of your best tweets

After all, you're getting new followers every day, not everyone has been there to read all your content from day one
I'm going to give you a great example that is standing out well because he brought new content to Money Twitter

@AskForTaxAdvice

Sure, some accounts already talk about taxes here and there

But @AskForTaxAdvice purely talks about it
That's his thing and whenever someone wants to know about taxes, he'll be the guy that comes to their minds

And I'll tell you why 👇👇
1- He has a great bio

• Says he has 15 years of experience in taxes (Set him as an Authority)
• He tells you can save 10k of tax per year (I mean, that's a lot of money, take my follow!)
2- He showed great social proof about his knowledge about taxes

Besides that, a lot of accounts replied and retweeted him giving their testimonial about his tax's knowledge (more social proof)
I'm sure a lot of people are wondering whether if they should engage or put more effort into creating content

Well, if you have a small following, you really need to engage

That's the only way to get visibility
If you don't have many followers, barely anyone will see your content

And like we talked before, now it's harder than ever to get your tweet seen if it has a low engagement at the first minutes
Now, if you have a decent following, let's say 1k +

Your focus should be on delivering unique and quality content

You'll be more rewarded from one good tweet/ thread than you'll be from 100 good comments
I'm not saying you should stop engaging, you should find the perfect balance

I rather spend 2 hour crafting great tweets than spend 2 hours engaging

For me, a good tweet can get me +50 followers, while a great day of engagement can only get me around +20 followers a day
Here's my advice:

Create lists with accounts you like and focus on engaging with those accounts

Don't waste time on your feed

You'll see yourself doing more in less time

It will give you more time to create your own content
Now that you have great content, it can still be hard to get visibility

There are two great ways to get it:

• Join a quality engagement group (Likes won't do it, you need comments too)
• Get someone on the same niche as you and trade retweets (ex: 1 RTT a day)
I'm sure you've already heard about it

But I'm gonna say it anyway

Avoid at all costs adding comments with 0 value

"100% agree"
"You know it"
"Great stuff here"

No one will follow you after it and you even might lose followers
There's one last thing I want to cover on this thread

People follow you to learn from you, right?

The best way to find something to learn is through your feed

But a lot of times people don't bother to do that
Instead, they only read your bio, if they find something that they like, they might give you a follow

If not, they'll go back to their feed

Simple
That's why I believe you should own at least one of the below:

• Blog
• Website
• Newsletter
• Free ebook

Get creative here

Your goal is to show that you have something to teach and to set yourself as an authority on your niche

Place it on your bio or as pinned tweet
I know that was a long thread

So, for those of you that scrolled all the way down, don't worry, I got you 👇👇
Here's what you should do:

• Deliver unique content
• Find ways to stand out
• Focus on quality over quantity
• Give value even before people follow you

What you should avoid:

• Be just one more generic account
• Waste time with poor engagement
