/ A number of people commented on the "diversity" of voices on Alberta's options in the federation featured in the @nationalpost this weekend. It has prompted me to share some more data on age and gender from #CoT2020 @loleen_berdahl @MelaneeLThomas @JLisaYoung @eplusgg
/ First observation: a majority in each age/gender group in Alberta is "alienated" (province does not get its fair share). Second observation: there is an interesting gender gap opening up between younger men and younger women in the province.
/ This gender gap is visible across many measures, but not all (e.g. it is there for spending and influence, but not respect -- and note older women on the respect item!).
/ On the closest thing we have to a Wexit item, the gender gap is also there but broader - and bigger for the middle age group in this case. It will be no surprise to my colleagues that there is a gendered element to the Wexit discourse.
/ Finally, check out the age/gender pattern on which order of government is more trusted on health care (and to a lesser extent, climate change). Like, wow (sorry for the technical jargon there).
/ Do I have a point? We are used to approaching debates about federalism in terms of regional interests (Alberta, Quebec) - increasingly I am starting to think that age and gender have to be part of the story. Which is why I started with the @nationalpost item.
/ And I will predictably end with the reminder that the data is available to scholars who want to explore this more thoroughly. #cdnpoli (also, I meant to tag @ccollinscwf at the start of the thread).
