If you don’t want a Trump-nominated justice on the Supreme Court, read this:
Trump is going to nominate a justice for the Supreme Court. The Senate will then vote to confirm the nominee. A Senate confirmation requires a simple majority vote.
There are 100 seats in the U.S. Senate. At least 51 senators will have to vote yea to confirm the nomination. (If it’s 50-50, the VP makes the deciding vote).
There are currently 53 republicans, 45 democrats, and 2 independents on the Senate. Assuming all of the democrats will not confirm Trump’s nomination, both of the independents and 4 republicans will have to also vote nay.
This means that you should contact your republican senators and let them know if you do not believe a Trump-appointed nominee should be on the Supreme Court (PA friends, this is Pat Toomey).
Calling is probably the most effective, but you can email as well. Contact them now to say that the nomination of a Supreme Court justice should not move forward until after the election, and contact them after Trump’s nomination to voice your concerns on his specific nominee.
If I find scripts for phone calls/emails, I’ll post them on this thread.
